Pollen Hygiene

Pollen sticks to things like velcro, the less time it spends on your body, the better.

From your body:

  • Rinse eyes with saline
  • Wash face, splash water or use washcloth
  • Run wet comb or brush through hair, mustache or beard
  • Rinse nose with saline or spray regularly
  • Wear sunglasses
  • Shower after big exposure

From your environment:

  • Shed and wash pollen exposed clothing upon arriving home
  • Use air purifiers and conditioners
  • Clean your pets who go outside and keep them out of bedrooms
  • Make bedrooms “clean rooms”
    • Use air filters
    • Keeps beds and pillows covered during day
    • Clean stuffed animals regularly
    • Clean pillows (ever) twice yearly
    • Keep windows closed
  • Vacuum drapes and window sills
  • Clean furnace and air conditioning filters
  • Clean home fan blades

Pollen avoidance strategies:

  • Travel if possible during high allergy times to regions that don’t have your allergens
  • Avoid outdoor activities during high pollen times of day (usually early morning and evening)
  • Consider wearing a mask if exposure is unavoidable (i.e. mowing)

Keep track of pollen levels and forecasts:
